An important goal of environmental health sciences is to address Tribal environmental health disparities in collaboration with Tribal Nations. This session highlights environmental health studies conducted by scientists and Native American students at the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health, the Center for Indigenous Environmental Health Research, and Center for Native American Environmental Health Equity Research in partnership with Tribal Nations. Presenters will discuss research investigating secondhand smoke exposure in Lakota communities, the Gold King Mine spill, indoor radon exposure, and contaminated water and traditional foods in Navajo, Crow, Cheyenne River Sioux and Hopi communities. Each project trains students in field, laboratory and analytical methods, and aims to increase students’ scientific knowledge and skills and their environmental health literacy. The overall goal of this session is to raise awareness about environmental health sciences research, and the important contributions that Native American students can make in this field.
